The Department of Research Facilities is seeking a candidate to provide expertise, operational oversight and training to the Research Core Facilities (RCF) within the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science (KRCBS).
The KRCBS includes 4 primary platforms of research : 1) Hematology, cancer and Immunological diseases, 2) Cardiovascular and diabetes complications, and 3) Trauma, critical care and inflammation, 4) Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology (iBEST) a collaboration with Ryerson University.
The RCF is an essential part of the KRCBS. It is a 36,000 square foot self-financed business, shared resource providing the very latest equipment and expertise in biomedical science.
The RCF includes 5 distinct areas of sub expertise, Flow Cytometry / Cell Sorting, Molecular Biology / Genomics, Bioimaging, Histology and Microfabrication as well as common shared equipment comprising over 150 instruments vital to the productivity of the KRCBS.
The ideal candidate must be an expert in Flow Cytometry with a good understanding of Microscopy, and be motivated to extend their knowledge and be able to assist users of the facility with an excellent understanding of the underlying science.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :
The primary role of this position is to run the Flow Cytometry / Cell Sorting core and provide back-up coverage to the Bioimaging core, assisting scientists to safely produce high quality research.
Provide education, training and scientific input to improve the impact, productivity and novelty of the research being done at the KRCBS
Providing technical expertise in the design / execution of scientific experiments, using the most current technologies available, developing new methodologies / applications to expand the repertoire of techniques being used in the KRCBS
Run the day to day operations of the RCF, including full operation of cell sorter, maintenance of equipment, and facilitating the production of high quality research that is done in a safe manner that complies with the regulatory guidelines and legislation
Performing financial responsibilities including, billing, maintaining budgets
Represent KRCBS by participating in professional organizations, community outreach, and professional development events such as courses and meetings
Ensuring safe operation of equipment and appropriate experimental design, analysis and publication to safeguard the international reputation of the KRCBS.
Securing funds through institutional grants to procure equipment in order to meet the resource demands of the research community
Understand and anticipate emerging techniques and technology in order to provide the KRCBS an advantage in the highly competitive field of medical research
Minimum of a Master’s degree with at least 7 years of lab experience or a Ph.D.
Significant hands on experience in wet bench medical research
Advanced knowledge in Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting
Good level of knowledge in Microscopy
Advanced level of general scientific knowledge and understanding
Good level of knowledge of a wide range of scientific laboratory equipment and techniques including : tissue culture, spectophotometric analysis, molecular biology procedures, column chromatograph, ultracentrifugation, purification of proteins and hormones, ELISA assays, multiplex assays, gel documentation, bacteria and viral vectors, western analysis and histology
Good level of knowledge of the safety and regulatory requirements of wet bench medical research
Capable of independent decision making
Work well under pressure and effective multi-tasker
Organized and efficient problem solver
Must have an excellent attendance record.
