We are seeking a Senior Structural Carbody Engineer based out of our Toronto, ON office to provide engineering support for the procurement of new or overhauled rail vehicles and projects involving reliability improvement or product upgrades.

For the right individual other locations, including telecommute will be considered. In this role, you will :

  • Provide engineering leadership for carbody and trucks to a variety of assignments. Role will include support of procurements for both new and overhauled rail transit vehicles.
  • Provide Engineering leadership in preparation of technical specifications for functional / sub system / testing / maintenance & training requirements for rail vehicle or subsystem procurements or overhauls.
  • Perform technical reviews of vehicle and subsystem design for transit and railroad fleets, analyze requirements, and prepare review comments for disposition of Contract Deliverables.
  • Leadership of activities involving oversight and witnessing of factory testing of vehicles and subsystems.
  • Assess performance and specification compliance for vehicles and subsystems.
  • Have a thorough familiarity with vehicle and subsystems from key suppliers in the market in order to perform detailed design reviews of product and system submittals.
  • Lead internal training and staff development for junior / intermediate engineers.
  • Qualifications

  • BSc degree minimum; Masters preferred.
  • P.Eng. designation in Ontario
  • 10+ years of design / application / oversight experience in the transit industry on rail vehicle projects
  • Must have some experience in rail vehicle structural design and manufacturing, plus experience with a vehicle fleet procurement program process.
  • Must have experience in machine design, structural design, welding, metallurgy, manufacturing processes, design for manufacturing.
  • Experience with classical stress analysis, linear and non-linear Finite Element Analysis, and vibration analysis.

  • Knowledge of industrial standards and codes such as ASTM, ASME, ANSI, AWS, Federal and Military Standards, NFPA. Knowledge of foreign industrial standards is a plus.
  • Direct experience with the design and manufacturing of rail vehicle and / or locomotive components and systems such as car body, trucks, brakes or interior equipment is a plus but not required.
  • Requires knowledge of regulatory requirements and experience interfacing effectively with clients and manufacturers.
  • Good writing and verbal communications skills, detail oriented and ability to work independently are essential.
  • Experience with either rapid transit vehicles or light rail vehicle projects is essential, experience with both highly desirable, experience with commuter rail or railroad vehicles and buses a plus.
  • Network of industry contacts and history of APTA participation a plus.
