Specific accountabilities

Reporting to the Vice-President and Chief Risk Officer, you will serve as the risk representative within the investment groups for the markets assigned to you.

You will play an influential leadership role, harnessing your cutting-edge expertise to oversee risk management throughout the lifecycle of an investment as well as operational management for the designated investment business unit.

You will work closely with your peers in other business units to develop and analyze real estate investments (acquisitions / dispositions, asset management, development projects) at the national and international levels, addressing the operational risks to which Ivanhoé Cambridge and its assets are exposed.

Lastly, as a risk management expert, you will be in charge of handling Ivanhoé Cambridge’s risk management challenges, meeting investment groups’ needs in this regard and promoting team adherence to the risk management culture in the designated department.

Your duties will include the following :

  • Serve as representative and leader for the Risk department in the designated investment group (including for asset management, investment meetings and assessment meetings) on any topics relating to risk management;
  • Influence the business unit leader on matters related to risk management;
  • Meet the needs of various business units by developing a strong advisory relationship and providing support and assistance to managers;
  • Participate early and often in discussions around approving transactions in order to ensure that the identified risks are properly characterized and prioritized;
  • Analyze risks on an ongoing basis and identify mitigating factors, including preparing for a market downturn;
  • Ensure that cross-sectoral and emerging risks are taken into account in investment strategies of the business unit;
  • Analyze financial risks for portfolio investments, including risks related to the market (interest rates, currency, tenant credit, liquidity and leverage) for portfolio investments;
  • Analyze possible high-level investment deals upstream of the review process and identify in brief the corresponding key risks, both financial and extra-financial, as well as mitigating elements;
  • Generate a risk rating based on a standardized analytical and governance framework that makes it possible to : Identify key transaction risks, prioritize them and assess their impact on the overall portfolio;
  • Identify key risk indicators to monitor over time;Identify proposed mitigation strategies;
  • Aggregate financial and extra-financial risks for the various portfolio investments in order to provide perspective for the business unit;
  • work with the global portfolio specialist to generate a portrait of the global portfolio;
  • Support the business unit’s asset management teams in identifying emerging risks in light of the performance indicators established in the investment thesis;
  • Attend asset review sessions and issue relevant recommendations;
  • Implement close monitoring of key risk indicators identified in the investment thesis in order to ensure that the newly acquired asset behaves as anticipated throughout its lifecycle;
  • Contribute to necessary analyses of specific risks, such as sensitivity analyses for key parameters of investment strategies (e.
  • g., terminal cap rate, NOI);
  • Carry out a quick review of prospective partners to identify the main high-level risks (e.g., reputation, financial health);
  • subsequently, assist with the operational due diligence for partners involved in the deal;
  • Serve as an expert advisor for the development and improvement of risk estimate and control systems;
  • Work with other risk specialists to develop the tools and business processes required by the business unit.
  • Key requirements

  • Master’s degree in finance;
  • CFA designation, an asset;
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in real estate investment;
  • Experience in managing investment risk;
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
  • In-depth knowledge of financial and quantitative analysis and modelling;
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills and the ability to deliver clear, concise messages;
  • Ability to perform under pressure within tight deadlines;
  • Adept at multitasking;
  • Ability to negotiate and influence others;
  • Ability to establish productive working relationships with people at all levels of the organization;
  • Team player with the ability to prioritize and organize and who likes to be part of a high-performance culture;
  • Proficiency with Office suite tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word); familiarity with Argus software, an asset;
  • Fluency in written and spoken French and English.
