The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced, highly motivated, self-starter who can take the Greenhouse Breeding Scientist position to a new level.

Responsibilities

  • Selection of parents, inbred development, design and management of hybrid and combining ability trials, working with genomics scientists to develop markers for beneficial agronomic or consumer traits
  • Development of large-scale low-cost phenotype screens
  • Data collection, analysis and interpretation, and database management using commercial plant breeding software
  • Seed preparation, planting, harvest, and agronomic, disease and chemical quality evaluations; data collection and analyses
  • Plant production and crossing in grow rooms, for seed increase, screening, and crossing purposes
  • Management of commercial scale inbred and hybrid seed production
  • Hiring, training and supervision of technical, support staff and seasonal workers
  • Staying current in the fast-moving disciplines of plant breeding and genetics, and translating new scientific concepts into unique approaches to our breeding needs
  • Monitoring the other breeding activities and understanding the rapidly evolving cannabis industry
  • Collaboration and consultation with other members of the breeding team and other departments in the company will be key to the success of the program
  • Regular reporting and oral presentations to both the plant R&D team and to management
  • Identify potential opportunities for new intellectual property
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Experience

  • Ph.D. degree in Plant Breeding or Genetics / Genomics, with a strong background in applied genomic data analysis
  • 3-5 years’ experience in plant breeding using molecular tools
  • Experience in designing experimental trials and analysis to screen for genetic markers of desirable traits
  • Knowledge and experience working under Canadian Cannabis regulations an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • High attention to detail, ability to keep records and ensure data quality
