Position Summary :

The Associate Underwriter is responsible for processing quotes, new business, renewals, endorsements and cancellations of moderately complex accounts.

This position will be part of an underwriting team that values collaboration, works hard to develop long-lasting relationships and strives to exceed expectations and deliver excellent results.

The successful candidate will have a high attention to detail, excellent communication skills and will be motivated to deliver an exceptional customer experience to external and internal stakeholders.

What you will be doing :

  • Responsible for the evaluation, selection, negotiation, and pricing for assigned policies. Execute individual pricing and risk selection decisions within the assigned underwriting authority and in accordance to corporate guidelines for correct pricing techniques.
  • Refer and redirect requests for pricing decision and risk selection for risks beyond personal authority, along with recommendations.

    Apply rate, exposure, retention, and rate adequacy guidelines to ensure profitability.

  • Develop and maintain a professional relationship with Commercial Insurance Specialists (CIS) and / or clients to enhance understanding of the target market and to contribute to quality service, problem solving, and risk selection.
  • Understand and adhere to service standards in accordance with company guidelines. Collaborate with CIS’s and clients to assist in business retention and customer satisfaction through regular interactions.

    Participate in the communication of the corporate underwriting philosophy, policies, and procedures as required and assist in the informal training and development of CIS.

    Investigate client’s risk factors relative to corporate pricing approach to gain support, agreement and enhance relationships.

  • Build knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes including competitive analysis and information.
  • Work collaboratively on special projects and assignments when required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • What we are looking for :

  • Post-secondary school education and / or previous underwriting experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with a company underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, risk information sources, underwriting / technical manual information, statuary constraints, and computer workflow procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Actively pursuing CIP designation.
  • Bilingual (English / French) is a definite asset.

  • Ability to foster and build long-term working relationships with CIS’s, clients and business areas inside and outside the work unit
  • Demonstrated proficiency and resourcefulness in identifying and analyzing relevant data and defining critical issues and alternatives.
