Job Description :
This role will provide strong medical and financial underwriting expertise to further develop the underwriting capability within Canadian New business.
As a member of the Underwriting Risk Management Team, the incumbent is accountable for guideline development, updating the Underwriting Rules Engine and completing life and critical illness underwriting audits.
What will you do?
Guideline Development
Create and update guidelines for life and critical illness insurance to enhance Sun Life’s position as a leader in the Canadian market.
Ensure guidelines are in keeping with Sun Life’s risk tolerance.
Keep up to date with medical knowledge, developments and trends in underwriting and the insurance industry. Identifies alignment where appropriate with other function areas in the line of business
Assist in coaching other Underwriters with respect to technical underwriting issues, including methodology, philosophy and processes
Assist in developing underwriting training material and participate in underwriting training
Underwriting Rules Engine
Update the Underwriting Rules Engine to maximize straight-through processing while following Sun Life’s underwriting guidelines and philosophies.
Maintain strong risk management while balancing the experience of our customers and advisors.
Auditing
Perform life and critical illness underwriting audits on underwriters as per the Audit Plan. Delivers results to the underwriter and their manager, ensuring appropriate training issues are identified and appropriate action taken.
Provide input to the ongoing review of the audit parameters.
What do you need to succeed?
7-10 years of progressive underwriting experience- life and critical illness required
Have an approval authority of $3,000,000 for Life and $500,000 for Critical Illness
Bilingualism (French, English) required for Quebec only- interactions with English-speaking customers or partners
Initiative; ability to coach and mentor
Strong impact, influence and negotiating skills
Strong analytical, and time management skills
Ability to multitask and make decisions
Working knowledge of reinsurance
Designation- Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) preferred
Undergraduate degree preferred
The ability to work in a fast paced environment and balance competing priorities to execute action plans
Knowledge of auditing best practices would be an asset

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.
