College : College of Engineering & Physical Sciences

Department : School of Engineering

Position Description :

The School of Engineering at the University of Guelph invites applications for two five-year contractually-limited positions at the Assistant Professor level.

Successful candidates will reside in the School of Engineering, play a leadership role in furthering the goals of the G360 Institute for Groundwater Research (G360), and help enhance strategically important graduate teaching in Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering and G360 research programs supported by various industry and municipal sponsors.

These positions will be encouraged to collaborate with the various departments including the School of Engineering, the School of Environmental Sciences, Geography, Plant Agriculture, and Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, as well as ties with the numerous G360 field research stations (located within the City of Guelph, Regional Municipality of Waterloo, industrial sites in California, Wisconsin and across North America).

Successful candidates will provide evidence of high-quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer-assessed publications and the securing of external research funding, active engagement with industry, and the supervision of graduate students.

Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to enhance the existing excellence in research contributions and training of our highly collaborative Water Resources Engineering and Environmental Engineering group.

The candidate must also be able to teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, demonstrate an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence in support of the department’s programs, and provide evidence of an ability to work in an interdisciplinary and student-centered environment.

The successful candidate will also be expected to make contributions through service to the Department, to the Faculty, to the University, and / or to the broader community.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Specific areas of expertise for each position are described below.

Position #1 : We seek a groundwater hydrologist with expertise in the assessment of groundwater recharge and analysis of the mechanisms of flow and transport throughout the entire unsaturated zone by linking the shallow soil and critical zones to groundwater flow system conditions, with a special focus on heterogeneous conditions including fractured rock.

The position requires demonstrated ability to use several methods and approaches at different spatial (from watershed to local) and temporal (multidecadal to hourly) scales under different climate conditions and considering the effects of climate variability.

Given the multidisciplinary nature of this research, the candidate will also require knowledge of hydrogeochemistry and vadose zone hydrology.

Information should be examined in the context of agriculture and food production, municipal source water management, and water resource requirements for industrial and commercial operations.

Position #2 : We seek a geologically trained field-focussed physical or contaminant hydrogeologist with expertise in using sensor technologies to quantify groundwater flow and parameters with an emphasis on fractured rock hydrology and a demonstrated ability to apply a multidisciplinary systems-based approach to understanding groundwater flow systems through the characterization of hydrological processes.

Information should be examined in the context of agriculture and food production, municipal source water management, and water resource requirements for industrial and commercial operations.

Candidates must hold a PhD in Civil, Environmental, Water Resources or Geological Engineering, or related Geoscience field at the start date of the appointment.

A professional geology or professional engineering license and relevant industrial experience are assets. International travel and ability to direct field research are requirements of these positions.
