Reporting to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health, the Communicable Disease Specialist is responsible for providing expert guidance and advice as per national and international standards, for the monitoring, prevention, treatment and control of communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections and vaccine preventable diseases for Nunavut.

As a senior advisor, you will provide territorial leadership for strategic planning, development and delivery of communicable disease programs in Nunavut, within the Health Protection Unit.

The incumbent is responsible for monitoring communicable diseases and evaluating the performance of health protection and disease control programs in order to provide an analysis of disease patterns and outbreaks over time.

The Specialist will identify members of the population who are most at risk and provide immediate, expert advice to health care providers and members of regional and heal services concerning the control of disease.

  • The ideal candidate for this position will possess a Bachelor of Nursing degree and three (3) years related experience following up with cases and contacts;
  • managing communicable disease outbreaks and with immunization. A Master’s degree in Public Health or Epidemiology would be considered an asset along with experience living in a northern community.

    The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English and French. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language would be considered an asset.

    Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit would also be considered an asset.

    Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
