Here's what you'll be doing....

Responsible for the product life cycle management of selected General Merchandise (GM) product categories including product selection, acquisition, merchandising, marketing, and management of inventory.

Their goal is the deliver addition to sales, gross margin, and inventory goals. A strong merchandise strategy for their assigned categories including development of assortment plans, strategic purchasing, inventory management, promotion and markdown planning is required to achieve the targets.

The Buyer collaborates with store management teams, marketing, receiving and ecommerce to provide the best possible service to our customers, while optimizing productivity.

The Buyer is accountable to safeguard and enhance the reputation of the University of Toronto Press while maximize sales and margins through the creative selection of product and product categories, skillful negotiations, and careful inventory management.

A certain amount of overtime will be required from time to time, especially during peak periods. Weekend and evening work is required at times.

Key Responsibilities include :

Category management

  • Assortment Planning : Determine product selection and pricing for categories based on customer need, space, seasonality, sku performance and market influences
  • Regular and timely analysis of sales, sku profitability and aged inventory to determine assortment revisions and markdowns
  • Purchasing : Source product, calculate optimal quantities to limit stock-outs, negotiate costs with suppliers, enter purchase orders and follow up with suppliers on deliveries
  • Data entry : Enter and maintain product information, manage purchase orders, and customize reporting for assigned categories
  • Process returns and address defectives with suppliers in a timely manner
  • Liaise with Ancillary Services, who manage the licensing of the University of Toronto brand
  • Stay up to date on industry and market trends by attending trade shows, conferences, performing competitive shopping analysis, and maintaining positive relationships with suppliers and Campus Store counterparts
  • Store Execution and Merchandising

  • Work closely and communicate with Store Operations Team regarding visual merchandising, product knowledge, special launches / promotions, and other pertinent business information
  • Work with other members of the General Merchandise buying team and Marketing department on planning and executing promotions / marketing opportunities
  • Ensure that assortment is available through ecommerce for online shopping and in all the retail locations as planned
  • Communicate with Receiving and Accounting departments regarding shipping or cost discrepancies
  • Other responsibilities

  • Participate in special projects and other duties related to the General Merchandise department including but not limited to sourcing of custom / departmental orders and assistance at off-site sales event
  • Other related duties as assigned
  • Education, Qualifications, and Experience :

  • Post-secondary graduate, or equivalent combination experience / education
  • 2 years of relevant retail purchasing and planning experience including product range development and life cycle planning
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes :
