Hatfield is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and technically strong individual to provide additional leadership to our growing fisheries and aquatics team in Fort McMurray.

The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of the environmental consulting market in Western Canada, gained from their technical and related business development experience in the disciplines of aquatic resources monitoring and assessment.

  • The successful individual will be responsible for : (i) managing a portfolio of environmental monitoring and assessment projects in Alberta;
  • ii) providing senior direction and support to marketing and business development activities related to resource-based sectors such as oil and gas, pulp and paper, and mining in Western and Northern Canada;
  • and (iii) supervising and mentoring environmental staff, as well as coordinating and managing project teams.

    The successful candidate will possess significant experience and technical expertise in at least one of the following disciplines :

  • Fish and fish habitat;
  • Aquatic ecology;
  • Water quality;
  • Ecotoxicology; or
  • Aquatic effects monitoring and impact assessments.
  • Responsibilities :

  • Manage and mentor teams of environmental specialists and technicians responsible for conducting technical work in aquatic resources monitoring, fisheries, baseline characterization and impact assessments, environmental effects monitoring, habitat assessment and quantification, and habitat compensation planning.
  • Be responsible for primary client contact; preparation and submission of design / report documents; coordinating and facilitating meetings and presentations for clients, regulators, and interest groups;
  • project scheduling and budgeting; and providing sound technical guidance to our clients.

  • Collaborate with biologists, ecologists, hydrologists, geoscientists, social scientists, engineers, and other project specialists to implement multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Organize and at times lead field surveys in remote locations.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of marketing and business development activities and lead the preparation of technical and financial proposals for current and prospective clients.
  • Education and Experience :

    Qualifications :

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in biological sciences or a relevant discipline.
  • Must be eligible or have a professional designation, preferably in Alberta (e.g., P. Biol., P. Ag., P. Chem., etc.).
  • Eight or more years of progressive work experience, managing aquatic and environmental components of oil and gas, mining, pulp and paper, or infrastructure projects at a senior level.
  • Appropriate qualifications for work in Alberta and British Columbia, and a valid Canadian driver’s license.
  • Competencies :

  • Experience operating in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork; and an ability / interest to work in the field, occasionally in remote locations.
  • Experience with designing and implementing scientific studies / field programs and managing field teams and the collection of fisheries / aquatic data.
  • Aptitude and experience in management and administration is essential, including financial and human resource management.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to lead / mentor new and existing staff.
  • Sound working knowledge of Provincial and Federal environmental legislation and environmental impact assessment methodology.
  • Experience working in large, multi-disciplinary teams is essential.
  • Strong data analyst skills and experience synthesizing large datasets is an asset.
