HSE Advisor

Location : Edmonton, AB

Diversified Transportation is currently looking for an experienced Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Advisor based in the Edmonton Office.

Reporting to the Director of Health, Safety & Environment, the Safety / HSE Advisor supports the Director by providing sound leadership to the local management team on HSE matters and acts as a resource to the management team overall.

The HSE Advisor leads the promotion, implementation, and delivery of the Health, Safety and Environmental Management System through their assigned business units.

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Responsible for the day to day function of the HSE department including support for the implementation and execution of the HSE Management System throughout our Edmonton and Kearl operations
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems
  • Manage client relations around both ongoing safety needs and any operational requirements
  • Manage employee performance issues; conduct regular employee performance reviews, ensuring constructive feedback is provided and measurable goals are set to gauge development
  • Support, communicate and educate employees in understanding and implementing the Health and Safety Management System and Environmental Management System
  • Manage staff orientation, training and professional development programs
  • Maintain and manage safety supply inventory
  • Serve as incident investigation team lead by taking on an incident command role in critical incident situations
  • Maintain documentation of incident files to ensure compliance with regulatory and client audits and in support of business processes
  • Support the Director in developing and meeting budgetary goals
  • Occasional travel is required up to 25%
  • On call responsibilities will be required
  • Desired Qualifications :

  • Completion of a college or university degree in a Management related field and / or in Occupational Health and Safety or Environmental Management
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professionals Designation (CRSP) required
  • 2 - 3 years of Operations or Safety Management experience
  • 5 - 7 years of Safety experience
  • Transportation Industry and insurance claims management knowledge and experience required
  • Experience utilizing electronic pre-qualification platforms - ISNetworld, CQNetwork, ComplyWorks and Avetta
  • WCB Claims Management experience and understanding of the WCB the appeals process
  • Experience with managing the safety requirements of larger client Oil and Gas organizations considered an asset
  • Experience with supporting the Certificate of Recognition and National Safety Code audit processes
  • Knowledge of applicable HSE regulations, codes, practices and standards, including the ability to accurately interpret and apply policies, procedures, and laws related to Health, Safety & Environment (ex : the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Alberta Traffic Safety Act and supporting Alberta transportation regulations, WCB legislation and case management processes)
  • Emergency Response experience and Standard First Aid certification
  • Experience in developing a working relationship with unionized employees
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Access and Excel at an Intermediate or Advanced level
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills including attention to proper email etiquette and public speaking
  • High attention to detail and confidentiality and must be fully aware of the sensitivity of the position and act upon it accordingly
  • High level of initiative and an ability to work under minimal supervision or direction
  • Ability to multi-task in a multi-office / location organization and problem-solve while maintaining flexibility in a fast paced and deadline based environment
  • Ability to work well with others by fostering positive relationships with internal contacts through engagement and leadership and by fostering positive relationships with external client representatives
