Description of Duties :

Develops literacy focused programs and resource materials for the public and Region of Waterloo Library (RWL) staff to encourage family literacy.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of public library services and children’s literature, family literacy and child development, normally acquired through a diploma / degree Early Childhood Education or Education, plus 2 years of related experience planning and delivering children’s programs.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow corporate policies and procedures. Knowledge of local rural communities.
  • Research, organization, and creativity skills to plan and develop programs, information, and resources to encourage children and their families to read and access library services and programs.
  • Communication and presentation skills to interact with and provide information to library patrons of all ages, especially children and parents / caregivers, using patience, tact, and understanding;
  • provide programming information and resources to staff and community partners; deliver literacy focused programs at libraries and outreach locations;
  • and participate as an effective team member.

  • Ability to read books, articles, and other materials to keep current on library resources and family / early literacy research.
  • Ability to write occasional articles for the local media and create promotional materials and displays.

  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office, library automation software (e.g., Sirsi Dynix Workflows), the Internet.
  • Ability to keep knowledge current regarding electronic resources / technology.

  • Ability to work shifts that can include evening and weekend hours as part of a regular schedule.
  • Ability to travel to various locations within (and occasionally outside) Waterloo Region.
  • Must provide a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3).
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
