Description of Duties :
Develops literacy focused programs and resource materials for the public and Region of Waterloo Library (RWL) staff to encourage family literacy.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Knowledge of public library services and children’s literature, family literacy and child development, normally acquired through a diploma / degree Early Childhood Education or Education, plus 2 years of related experience planning and delivering children’s programs.
Knowledge of and ability to follow corporate policies and procedures. Knowledge of local rural communities.
Research, organization, and creativity skills to plan and develop programs, information, and resources to encourage children and their families to read and access library services and programs.
Communication and presentation skills to interact with and provide information to library patrons of all ages, especially children and parents / caregivers, using patience, tact, and understanding;
provide programming information and resources to staff and community partners; deliver literacy focused programs at libraries and outreach locations;
and participate as an effective team member.
Ability to read books, articles, and other materials to keep current on library resources and family / early literacy research.
Ability to write occasional articles for the local media and create promotional materials and displays.
Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office, library automation software (e.g., Sirsi Dynix Workflows), the Internet.
Ability to keep knowledge current regarding electronic resources / technology.
Ability to work shifts that can include evening and weekend hours as part of a regular schedule.
Ability to travel to various locations within (and occasionally outside) Waterloo Region.
Must provide a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3).
Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
