Reporting to the Manager, Laboratory Services, the incumbent is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day operations of the Core Lab section.

  • The Core Lead provides technical supervision, education and leadership to YHC laboratory staff; recommends and implements continuous process improvement and seeks to reduce costs, improve efficiency and improve quality;
  • provides or designates staff training.

  • Working in collaboration with the laboratory leadership team, the incumbent oversees quality control and external proficiency testing;
  • reviews, develops, writes and implements Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the Core Laboratory; coordinates and facilitates workplace solutions and consults with the Medical Director and Professional Staff as required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of laboratory accreditation requirements, legislation and government policies and procedures related to laboratory standards of practice;
  • Extensive knowledge of techniques and methods in the relevant laboratory disciplines;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Meditech Laboratory Information System (LIS);
  • Effective problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, and time management skills;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office software programs;
  • Proven ability to supervise and lead staff;
  • Proven ability to communicate with and deal effectively with patients, families, staff, physicians and other health care providers;
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with and / or guide others in conflict situations;
  • Champions professional development and continuing education for all laboratory staff. Ability to apply knowledge to the performance of technical analyses and related procedures in the relevant disciplines;
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of the team;
  • Ability to lead and adapt to change management and process improvement;
  • Cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity.

    The successful candidate is required to have a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution, Current Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technologist, a minimum of five (5) years discipline-

    related experience as a Medical Laboratory Technologist and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity.

    An equivalent combination of education, training and / or experience may be considered. A Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related field and proficiency in writing departmental policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) are desired
