Major Responsibilities :
Reporting to the Program Manager, Urban Design, you will be responsible for urban design built form and open space studies and development reviews involving a substantial degree of complexity, and calling for both hands-
on and leadership experience in built form analysis, landscape design and planning, with expertise in streetscape design and urban forestry.
Prepares built form and open space studies, coordinates urban design projects, identifies and analyzes problems / opportunities in the public environment and develops and implements design proposals and solutions, including the preparation of urban design drawings, sections, perspectives, models, etc.
Consults with interested parties, including City Departments, elected representatives, and affected public, on proposed projects.
Negotiates with developers and their consultants to develop proposed sites, acceptable built form solutions, and public amenities as part of development review projects.
Represents the Division or Department at meetings and committees.
Acts as an expert witness at the Ontario Municipal Board.
Key Qualifications :
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to :
University degree in architecture or landscape architecture or a related discipline, or the approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience developing and implementing complex urban design built form and landscape architecture studies, master plans, public realm / open space plans, policies, guidelines and secondary plans.
Experience in landscape design including streetscape design and plant material and an understanding of the principles of urban forestry.
Experience in urban design and leading complex urban design studies from conception to completion, including project management skills.
Experience consulting and negotiating with the community, City Divisions, public and private agencies, and developers.
Experience using design industry standard software applications such as; Micro station, AutoCAD, Adobe (Illustrator and Photoshop), Indesign, Sketch up for the production of built form analyses and streetscape working drawings.
Member or eligibility to become a member of a professional organization (OAA, OALA) related to the fields outlined in this position.
You must also have :
Ability to work well and lead in a team environment.
Ability to balance political, community and other stakeholder interests in the development and design of projects.
Ability to work on assignments / projects demanding critical judgement and analytical thinking.
Highly developed technical, analytical, design, graphic, verbal and written communication skills relating to urban design matters.
Ability to develop and maintain solid internal and external relationships.
Knowledge of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and other regulations / legislation that apply to the job duties.
