General Information

This position is available in the Liquids Operations group within TransCanada's Liquids Pipelines business unit. Reporting to the Director, Systems Operations, this position will be responsible for the day to day leadership and management of the Leak Detection engineering team.

The Leak Detection Engineering team is accountable for the development and maintenance of the Liquids Pipelines leak detection systems and software’s.

These systems operate 24x7 and are a critical part of ensuring TransCanada’s commitment to the safety and compliance of its operating assets.

As the manager of the team, these accountabilities will be accomplished through interaction with team staff, business unit peers, system vendors and industry partners.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to continuously improve the Liquids Pipelines leak detection system performance in alignment with business priorities, objectives and strategy;
  • Lead day to day leak detection system performance through effective resource development and allocation;
  • Develop and manage the Leak Detection program strategy and roadmap through effective engagement with internal stakeholders, industry peers and partners, and vendor management;
  • Oversee governance of the Leak Detection program in alignment with TransCanada’s operating management system, regulatory requirements and external commitments;
  • Manage the leak detection systems and software life cycles through effective vendor engagement, contract negotiation and resource management;
  • Oversee the Leak Detection Engineering research and development program;
  • Lead a large technical team including developing the annual budget, resource forecasting and allocation, while ensuring team engagement and effectiveness;
  • Develop and foster an environment which actively enables and encourages employee innovation, continuous improvement and commitment to operational excellence;
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, provincial, and local regulatory requirements and company policies and procedures pertaining to leak monitoring and detection;
  • Effectively work and interact with peers in Operations, Commercial and Corporate service teams in order to optimize the Leak Detection Engineering team’s performance and contribute to overall Company success;
  • Ensure quality customer service for all internal and external stakeholders and clients through understanding the business needs and the environment of our customers;
  • Continue to grow and learn in the role and its responsibilities as the Liquids Business unit develops through future expansions.

  • Qualifications

  • Capable of leading, managing and developing a large technical team with varying levels of expertise;
  • Demonstrate leadership in the areas of safety, decision making, change management, employee development, performance management, and team building;
  • Strong oral, written communication and presentation skills;
  • Effective conflict resolution skills;
  • Effective problem solving skills through the use of tools and processes;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills combined with the ability to utilize those skills during interactions with peers, employees, industry partners, and community groups;
  • Experience in software development and software life cycle management is an asset;
  • Industry awareness and capacity for influence on pipeline remote monitoring systems, recommended practices, and regulations is an asset
  • Knowledge and familiarity with TransCanada’s business vision, practices, processes and systems would be an asset;
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced and dynamic environment and prioritize effectively.
  • Education / Experience

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor’s Degree, Diploma or Proficiency Certificate in a technical based field of study (Engineering, Commerce or equivalent) is required;
  • Minimum 10 years’ of directly related experience, previous leadership experience is considered an asset;
  • Experience with development and / or operations of SCADA, Leak Detection or Automation systems is required;
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered;
  • Knowledge of liquid pipeline and terminal operations is considered an asset.
  • Depending on the qualifications of the applicants, the successful candidate may be offered a position at a more appropriate level and / or ladder.
