The Quality Assurance Representative is accountable for the administration and maintenance of the VSL quality management system with respect to the shipyard and specific projects.

This includes ongoing assessment of the system to ensure suitability and that it continues to meet the objectives of Seaspan Shipyards Quality Policy and Quality Management System manual, conducts QA inspections and address deficiencies.

This position reports directly to the Senior Quality Assurance Representative, and administers policies and practices established by the Manager Quality Assurance.

Scope and Complexity

The Quality Assurance Representative is responsible for ensuring VSL maintains compliance with the quality management system in accordance with the Quality Management System manual and Standard Operating Procedures taking from direction from the Senior QAR and / or Quality Assurance Manager.

This role works with all Shipyard departments to ensure that all standard operating procedures reflect the methods and techniques currently in use and that the resulting workmanship from these procedures meets customer and SMC quality expectations.

He / she works with all levels of employees within the Victoria Shipyards, ensuring that high quality work is carried out in a timely and efficient manner.

When required, the Quality Assurance Representative is expected to act as an arbitrator between the customer’s representatives and Shipyard production Project managers in regards to assessing acceptability of work performed against Shipyard standards, customer quality expectations and safety rules and requirements set out by the Canadian Coast Guard and other regulating bodies.


The Quality Assurance Representative communicates with all levels, from senior shipyard management to shop floor personnel to discuss issues pertaining to quality requirements.

This role reports on a regular basis to the Senior Quality Assurance Representative on all issues and matters related to the conformance and maintenance of the Shipyard quality management system.


External contacts of this position include government officials, vessel owners, and owner’s representatives. Interactions with these contacts focus on liaising and discussing quality requirements and issues.

Duties / Accountabilities

  • Coordinates and maintains the quality management system within the Victoria Shipyards by monitoring, reporting, and administering actions which prevent the occurrence of non-
  • conformities, tracking and verifying corrective actions, and reporting on the performance of the quality system to the Senior QAR and / or Manager Quality Assurance

  • Assesses non-conformances and coordinates with Shipyard personnel to correct the process or amend system procedures to correct any non-conformity.
  • Assists in maintaining the quality management system in a manner consistent with the quality management system manual and communicates effectively the requirements and procedures to all employees.
  • Conducts in departmental Audits.
  • Maintains all standard operating procedures and quality assurance documentation and forms related to the specific project.
  • Conducts quality assurance inspections and witnesses performance tests. Documents results and is responsible for the preservation of data.
  • Education and Experience

  • Completion of Grade 12 education, supplemented by a Post-secondary Diploma in Quality Management Systems, or an equivalent amount of relevant education and experience
  • Internal auditing experience is an asset
  • Shipbuilding or related trades experience is an asset
  • Skills and Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in the English language

  • Computer proficiency in standard Microsoft applications
