Industrial Electrician

Overall Purpose

To inspect, test, dismantle and make electrical and certain mechanical repairs to all types of electrical equipment in assigned departments.

Major Responsibilities

  • Receives work orders, instructions or wiring diagrams. Inspects and makes tests, and interprets results, consults wiring diagrams and determines material or replacement needs according to specifications.
  • Plans working procedure, determining tools and material requirements. Locates source of trouble in any type of electrical equipment or apparatus by tracing and testing circuits and inspection for mechanical failure.
  • Dismantles, inspects, repairs, replaces or adjusts faulty parts and wiring on electrical equipment, switches, circuit breakers, transformers, hydraulic and magnetic brakes, panel boards, resistance banks, battery tractors and starters and electronic equipment.
  • Rewires, insulates, paints and reassembles equipment, completing adjustments required to obtain proper operating characteristics.
  • Makes certain mechanical repairs to equipment being serviced including the replacement, repair and installation of sleeve and antifriction bearings, gears, shafts, pins, etc.
  • Fabricates parts as required, using shop machine and hand tools. Performs work requiring a thorough working knowledge of mechanical and electrical principle and techniques, knowledge of properties of material and ability to use tools of the trade.
  • Works in assigned areas and services and repairs equipment in shop. As called upon, works in other areas of the plant.
  • Maintains cleanliness of area where work is performed.

  • Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma / GED and Ontario Industrial Electrician Certificate of Qualification 442A is required.
  • Must have a valid Ontario Driver’s license.
  • Must be capable of physically demanding work (inside & outside).
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to follow directions and work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Advanced trouble shooting and problem solving skills are required.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills are required.
  • Basic personal computer and corporate standard software skills (MS Word, Excel) are required.
  • Basic skills in planning and scheduling of maintenance work are required.
  • Knowledge / experience in a Computerized Maintenance Management System is an asset.
  • Hours of Work

    The hours of work may involve working 8 or 12-hour shifts on a rotating schedule. Occasional overtime may be required, however, hours of work will be subject to the statutory maximum hours of work and overtime as set out in the Employment Standards Act, and in Company policy.

    The hours of work and work schedule may be amended from time to time.

    Work Environment

    The work environment will require climbing, crouching, lifting etc. of heavy objects, on a repetitive basis, and could often be in hot, dusty, greasy, confined areas or at heights.

    The use of respirators, fresh air breathing apparatus and standard plant safety equipment will also be required.
