The Clerk of Work will monitor the work of the contractor and trades that carry out contracts for BGIS clients. The main responsibility is to make sure that work is carried out to BGIS standards, specification and schedule.
In most cases, the specifications are prepared by architects or engineers of BGIS. The incumbent will make sure that the correct materials and workmanship are used and that the client is given quality work and value for money.
The incumbent is either on site all the time or make regular visits. They need to be vigilant in their inspections of a large range of technical aspects of the work.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinate, monitor and review work of Contractor for assigned projects on behalf of the Project Manager and Infrastructure Ontario.
Review contract documents, architectural and engineering drawings and specifications in order to maintain familiarity with scope of work and to assist the contractor with understanding of documents.
Review contractor shop drawings and provide comments on conformance / non-conformance to Consultants
Act as liaison between Consultants and contractor.
Conduct on-site observation and spot-checks of work in progress.
Complete and distribute daily reports from site including reports on all on-site matters, third-party inspections, progress, safety concerns, manpower numbers, and impacts on progress and the construction schedule.
Monitor contract compliance by the contractor, through review of work in progress and assisting the contractor in coordination of critical reviews by consultants at primary milestones in the project schedule and at the end of each construction phase
Report on a daily basis work that is contrary to the contract documents and deficiencies to project manager, Consultants and contractor.
Report on a regular basis about quality control and quality of work at the site. Advise when critical issues affecting quality of work are arising
Report on a daily basis, any RFI’s and clarifications required by the contractor that are critical to the achievement of the construction schedule
Maintain job-site files, documents, reports and daily log; prepare periodic reports for the Owner, project managers and Consultants as required.
Attend all site reviews with the Consultants project managers and contractors.
Attend all job-site meetings as the project manager’s and Consultants representative and in conjunction with project manager and Consultants.
Receive, record, present for Consultants approval, and maintain custody of samples submitted by construction contract.
Prepare and issue documentation form the site including dimensioned sketches and drawings and representative photographs of site conditions
Review requests for progress payments submitted by construction contractor and forward with recommendations to Consultants.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, architecture or related field or demonstrated, related building construction experience in the capacity of a Clerk of the Work for 3 to 5 years
Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, codes, and other material pertinent to construction.
Working knowledge of building components and systems, construction materials, means and methods.
Knowledge of applicable municipal, provincial building codes and regulations including, OSHA, NFPA, Life Safety and hazardous materials.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships.
Proficiency with the following programs : Outlook, Word, Acrobat (PDF management), Excel
The construction work is being delivered after-hours so the clerk of duties will run from 6pm to 2am.
Licenses and / or Professional Accreditation
LEED AP is an asset
