Your Primary Focus as Communications Director :

The Communications Director is a senior leader within the Corporate Communications team, working with communication leaders from across the organization to ensure best practices in formulating and executing ATB-

wide strategies for effective communications that deliver a consistent and unified team member, customer and brand experience.

Within that overall team, the Communications Director is specifically responsible and fiercely accountable for the development and oversight of the strategic communications plans for the business unit they support.

The Communications Director works as a key member of the leadership teams to understand key initiatives, listen to team members and understand their communications needs, identify issues and priorities, develop communications strategies, manage issues, implement innovative and resonant communications solutions, and support the goals of our business teams in alignment with ATB’s overall business and strategic objectives.

Specific Accountabilities :

  • Strategic communications development : As part of the overall strategic communications plan, develops communication strategies that clearly deliver on ATB’s business objectives.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of an overarching enterprise-wide communications strategy to support the business goals of ATB
  • Develops and implements best-in-class communications strategies, key messages, tactics and metrics that keep team members well informed, enhance engagement, increase profile and drive the business priorities and objectives of the teams they support
  • Provides strategic communications and issues management advice to the Executive Vice Presidents in the business divisions and their leadership team
  • Works to position the Executive Vice Presidents as community leaders and positive representative of ATB
  • Designs and develops performance metrics to track and evaluate success of communication strategies
  • Stays ahead of economic, market and competitor insights relative to business to share with team members to best support strategic communications plans
  • Trusted partner and leader : Mentors and leads communications team members while being a partner to business leaders by providing key subject matter expertise.
  • Well-respected and valued strategic communications partner, and a great (not perfect) leader to their communications team
  • Provides communications expertise and counsel to the respective business leadership teams to ensure the communication approach best positions our business divisions with respect to ATB’s corporate goals
  • Excels at developing strong relationships and building and gaining trusted collaboration
  • Brand and strategic alignment : As a senior member of the communications team, plays a leadership role in building our brand and advancing our culture.
  • Ensures all communications are aligned with ATB’s Story and brand promise, influencing team member engagement and our employer brand, reinforcing our strategic goal of being the place to work
  • Enhances and advances ATB’s culture and corporate image by infusing our corporate values internally (the ATBs) and proactively managing our reputation
  • Positions the business strategies and business plans within the context of ATB’s corporate strategy and business plan to further enhance team member understanding and engagement
  • Resource management, channels & tools : A communications expert continually striving to learn and hone their skills with passion for collaborating to up the game’ in corporate communications at ATB.
  • Uses the lens smart, simple and helpful to develop strategies and implement tools that make it easy for team members to access information and that builds a culture of consumption and active learning
  • Shared best practices and leads the team in seeking out innovative trends to adopt within communications solutions
  • Willing and able to roll up their sleeves to do what it takes to meet deadlines and deliver effective solutions
  • Job Requirements

    The competencies & skill sets you’ll need to succeed :

  • 10+ years of progressive communications experience, including within the financial services sector
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in working with senior management and a proven track record of outstanding performance
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, business or a related field, or a specialized diploma in communications combined with extensive experience
  • Masters degree is considered an asset
  • Exceptional leadership, collaboration, strategic planning and communication skills
  • Possesses change management and employee communications expertise
  • Ability to establish and convey a vivid and compelling vision
  • Proven track record at delivering results / Results-focused approach and strong work ethic
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate and coach others
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - able to build strong relationships with and be seen as a trusted strategic partner amongst senior leaders
  • Ability to successfully balance competing priorities
  • Professional association membership and / or accreditation in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS)
  • Please note : there is an opportunity for more than one Director of Communications role to be filled through this posting.
