Barr is seeking an engineer with demonstrated experience leading, managing, and mentoring multi-discipline project teams as a practice builder.
This position provides the opportunity to build a practice around a core team to work on a variety of consulting projects involving traditional geotechnical engineering designs such as shallow and deep foundations;
slope stability; seepage; bearing capacity; settlement; pavements; retaining walls; and dams. Projects focus on geotechnical and civil engineering design and analysis and include the preparation of plans and specifications, planning and oversight of investigations and analysis, writing technical reports, and cost estimating.
The position will include project management for scope, schedule, and budget compliance, and will require working with engineers in other Barr offices.
Administrative responsibilities such as business development, project management, mentoring and coaching, project planning and scheduling, and workload estimating make up a significant part of this role.
This position will require out-of-town work assignments to meet the needs of our clients including field work such as client meetings and presentations, construction review, and facility inspections.
NOTE : Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature the rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.
While the position is located in the Calgary office, fulfillment of the position responsibilities will require periodic travel.

Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis
10+ years of relevant work experience involving geotechnical engineering
Professional member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or ability to obtain membership within one year
Strong technical understanding of a wide range of civil engineering such as structural, water resources with an emphasis on geotechnical analysis and design
Demonstrated flexibility, willingness to modify schedule as required to meet deadlines and / or client needs
Demonstrated technical project leadership, management, and organizational skills
Demonstrated client relationship development / business development experience
Desire to help build the geotechnical group in our Calgary office
Computer skills including modeling software (such as FLAC, Plaxis, MODFLOW and / or GeoStudio), word processing and spreadsheets
Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to support project needs
Good verbal and written communication skills
Acceptable driving record
Legal authorization to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship
Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without the need for sponsorship
15+ years of relevant work experience
Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering
Experience with civil infrastructure including roadway, foundation, retaining wall, and bridge design
Experience with dams, including hydropower and tailings dam design, management and operation
Experience or familiarity with geotechnical engineering in support of buried pipelines
Engineering consulting or related experience
Knowledge of the geotechnical markets in western Canada
Strong, proven business development skills
Strong relationships with clients and the ability to foster ongoing relationships
Desire to become involved in the greater geotechnical community by performing research, giving presentations, and preparing publications
Proven experience collaborating and maintain relationships across offices
