Appointment Type : Temporary Full-time

Duties : The IT Telecom Administrator works with the Network team to manage, support and ensure integrity and resilience of the VIU telecom infrastructure.

Under the direction of the Infrastructure Manager, responsibilities include but not limited to the following :

  • Telecom Incident Coordination : troubleshooting the VIU telecom system during system outages and communicating breadth of impact to management and communications coordinator.
  • Install and maintain telecom hardware and software.
  • Develop and maintain telecom installation and configuration procedures.
  • Contribute to and maintain system standards.
  • Perform and manage backups of Nortel and Mitel telecom systems.
  • Address unique client telecom needs by reviewing requirements, analyzing available technology to meet requirements, reviewing options with client and testing possible solutions.
  • Research and recommend innovative and, where possible, automated approaches for telecom administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage resources and provide economies of scale.
  • Install new, and rebuild existing telecom hardware, peripherals, services, and settings in accordance with standards and project / operational requirements.
  • Apply system patches and upgrades on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate with vendors (account, engineering, and support teams) related to telecom systems design, procurement, billing, installation, configuration changes, updates, support issues, and contracts.
  • Serve as an escalation point and subject matter expert for all telecom requests and challenges.
  • Monitor logs and alerts, and perform ongoing hardware upgrades and resource optimization as required.
  • Update and create departmental documentation, informational handouts / e-mails, and maintain department website related to telecom services.
  • Provide setup, support, and billing maintenance for all organizational mobile devices.
  • Coordinate with other VIU departments to resolve telecom issues such as those related to wiring, renovations, and new building or office projects.
  • Monitor UPSs for telecom equipment.
  • Analyze and identify cost savings and management of telecom and mobile billing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.
  • Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives;
  • and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

    Required Qualifications : Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field from an accredited institution. (Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).

    Experience in administration and support of telecommunications services.

    Working knowledge of networking and VoIP technologies.

    Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

    Demonstrated ability to produce and maintain high quality technical documentation.

    Demonstrated ability to conduct research, produce reports and make appropriate technical recommendations.

    Demonstrated ability to work in a high-pressure environment, requiring proficiency in multitasking, prioritizing and meeting deadlines.

    Willingness to travel, as required, to other VIU campuses.

    A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island University policy and procedures).

    Preferred Qualifications : Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a large organization, preferably with experience in a post-secondary institution.

    Demonstrated working knowledge of VoIP technologies.

    Experience in managing enterprise class telecom systems.

    Experience in enterprise networking and firewall administration (HP, Aruba and Palo Alto).

    Experience with creating purchase orders and organizational billing management.

    Experience with Nortel, PBX and Genesis Genweb.

    Experience in medium to large scale Mitel VoIP deployments.

    Experience with vendor relationship building and management.

    Experience with providing mobile device setup, purchasing, and troubleshooting.
