Senior Director / Director, R&D Engineering

What you will do

This position is the senior most development center leadership role in the largest product design center in a $500M global Intrusion security products business.

The role is responsible to develop and deliver new products, support the business’s existing products, and provide technical services to the business’s customers.

This position is responsible to provide leadership and vision to more than 250 R&D professionals in the mechanical, hardware, embedded software and systems, certification, project management and product testing disciplines who work in the Toronto engineering center.

In addition this position is responsible for the over-all new product delivery performance of the Toronto design center including on time project delivery, product development cycle time, achieving product cost and design re-

use targets, as well as over-all engineering productivity. This position is responsible for developing an exciting innovation culture in the design center, for encouraging the team to innovate, to protect our innovations through patent filings and for establishing a continuous improvement culture within the R&D team demonstrated through identified annual initiatives that drive YOY improvement in design center performance.

How you will do it

Partnering with Marketing, Sales, Project Management, Product Management, Operations and executive leadership this role is ultimately responsible for delivering new products to the business on time, on budget and superior to the competitor’s offering and to provide a continuous flow of new products to the market, and continuous growth of new product sales for the business.

Taking an active role in the global Security Products business R&D leadership team is also a large portion of this role through which we will foster best practice sharing across the $1.

5B Security Products business, share resources and R&D capabilities and jointly working to establish the technical direction of the collective business.

Coordinate the development of software, hardware and service elements to deliver defined solution sets.

Managing hardware and software development teams locally and those based in other countries.

Work closely with the Manufacturing and Supply Chain functions to ensure the efficient and effective manufacturing of products and drive product cost reductions wherever possible including participation in joint PFMEA reviews to ensure effective control plans.

Work closely with the Marketing, Product Management and Sales functions to ensure successful new product introductions.

Work closely with the Service function to respond to product quality issues.

Manage and improve the product development stage gate process. Drive use of leading edge design tools / Computer modeling (Simulation) to shorten development time and gain competitive edge.

Establish and track appropriate product design metrics to reduce overall development cycle time.

Be responsible for internal L3 technical support and external technical cooperation.

Be responsible for implementation of the quality system, also for adherence to Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance programs.

Support ISO9001 / TS16949 Implementation.

Manage and support the software development team to deliver world class software development capabilities and processes. Including demonstrated expertise the Agile Software development.

Participate in development of Patent Strategy-Filing in appropriate jurisdictions for protection along with ensuring key areas are targeted to ensure competitive edge.

Maintain strong grasp of industry trends, cutting edge technology and marketplace changes to ensure that TSP remains in a leading position with regard to its competitors.

Utilize research, technology, and product partnerships to access innovation, enhance capabilities, and cost effectively expand the overall product portfolio.

What we look for

  • Is knowledgeable of industry leading new product development practices, knows what great looks like in the context of a high performing R&D functional organization, and has the ability to quickly assess, lead, monitor and deliver improvements in the new product development performance of the business.
  • Has significant (5+ years) experience in leading a large (150+ engineers) embedded systems design center including having responsibility for the development and adherence to a $25+M development center budget leading the development of new products for at least a $150+M business.
  • Knowledge of security and / or connected home industry trends and technology advancements and demonstrates the ability to interpret technology and market trends as a foundation for technology and product roadmaps.
  • Understands and can implement project portfolio management techniques to continuously improve return on R&D investments
  • Understands the factors influencing project cycle time, and has the proven ability to implement practices that result in reductions in over-
  • all project time to completion.

  • Designs, implements, measures and executes processes to assure design quality expectations are met in product design, sourcing, purchase of finished goods, services business, and other non-
  • manufacturing related functions which impact customers.

  • Is an effective leader of people who understands how to formulate meaningful, achievable new product development goals and objectives, knows how to identify and develop employee talent, and understands the challenges associated with satisfying all stakeholders.
  • Drives a high level of awareness and appreciation for the importance of high quality products, and influences and inspires all of associates to do their best to provide high quality products to our customers.
  • Is skilled at working with centralized Corporate functional leadership and understands the importance of maintaining good alignment between the business teams and the centralized function.
  • Is a team player, works well at the senior leadership level and personally has a passion for delivering the best possible new products to our customers.
  • Has absolute commitment and a track record of delivering products on time and on or below budget.
  • Must Have :

  • Bachelor Degree in a technical field is required, Advanced degree strongly preferred
  • 15+ years of experience in the field of new product development, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership capacity
  • 5+ years of direct embedded systems engineering team leadership experience in at least a $150M+ multi-site global business employing at least 150 engineering professionals
  • Experience managing at least a $20M engineering budget and in leading a multi-cultural, multi-disciplined engineering team.
  • Significant experience working in partnership with offshore engineering centers in India or other best cost countries
  • Experience in the security products industry and / or connected home industry is preferred
  • Solid leadership presence and ability to lead and develop top engineering talent
