About the Position :
Reporting to the Vice President, Technology Management, this position heads the Natural Sciences and Engineering (NSE) team within TEC Edmonton’s Technology Management Group.
The Technology Management group is responsible for the management of intellectual property, technology transfer, and commercialization activities for the University of Alberta and its inventors, as well as selected inventions created in the Greater Edmonton Region.
Technology transfer is one of the avenues of transferring knowledge to the community so that social benefit can be realized through new technological advancements and through management of the arising outcomes and inventions.
Major Responsibilities :
Jointly manages gross patent expenditures in excess of $1 million per year
Jointly generates approximately $1 million in gross revenue per year
Recruits, trains, supervises, mentors, and provides oversight to four (4) Technology Management Officers
Manages innovations that may encompass a broad range of technology areas, including ICT, nanotechnology, cleantech, and agriculture
Chairs team meetings and ensures that intellectual property deadlines are met
Collaborates with the University and Greater Edmonton Region innovators to devise intellectual property strategy and technical development plans for early stage technologies, including budgets
Helps secure intellectual property protection and commercial partnership at the optimal time for each technology
Negotiates or manages the negotiation of a variety of intellectual property contracts (license, collaboration, spin-off company formation, etc.
including equity and other financial terms
Advises Research Services Office in negotiating and drafting non-standard intellectual property provisions for research agreements with industry
Ensures University technologies are marketed to potential industry partners through appropriate means
Ensures team meets revenue targets through conclusion of license contracts and successful completion of fee for service projects in the Greater Edmonton Region
Prepares commercialization plans for grant applications relevant to technology transfer
Prepares and maintains patent budget
Advises the CEO, TEC Edmonton Executive Team, and other units within the University of Alberta on strategic matters relating to intellectual property
Promotes TEC services to the Greater Edmonton Region
Collaborates with TEC Edmonton’s Business Development Group to successfully complete projects for external clients and to facilitate timely negotiation of contracts to establish University spin-off companies
Advises Faculty Deans (Engineering, Agriculture, and Science) on relevant projects and commercialization issues pertaining to each Faculty
Arranges and conducts information sessions to inform the University research community about intellectual property and the commercialization process
Engages with local community to promote collaborative opportunities with University
Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering; Graduate degree / MBA preferred
Minimum 5 years’ experience in technology / intellectual property management; preferably in an educational setting
Proven leadership skills and ability to work well within a team
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build long-term relationships with diverse clients
Strong negotiation skills with ability to draft complex legal contracts
Strong organizational skills with an ability to manage multiple tasks and a portfolio of inventions at various stages
Acute analytical skills with ability to problem-solve and dispute-resolve in difficult situations
Proven experience in management of finance and budgeting
Well-versed in many areas of science
Current knowledge of industry receptors for licensing as well as patent, copyright, trademark , and contract law
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
In accordance with the Temporary Administrative and Professional Staff agreement, this position has an initial appointment of one year from the date of hire, with the possibility of renewal, offers a comprehensive benefits package found at and annual salary commensurate with education and experience.
