Duties

  • Works under the direction of and in collaboration with a Registered Nurse in the care of residents.
  • Participates with the interdisciplinary team to provide the best possible care for residents and their support systems as they deal with mental health disorders.
  • Uses the activities of daily living as a basis for therapeutic intervention, to reinforce residents’ strengths, promotes healthy lifestyle changes through health teaching, provides consistency and continuity of care and an atmosphere of caring and security.
  • Promptly responds to actual or potential problems and demonstrates calm confidence to diffuse same in unison with other hospital personnel and under the direction of the in-charge staff.
  • Involves residents in the treatment process and decision-making as much as possible.
  • Incorporates knowledge of the unique needs of individuals with varying stages of cognitive deficits.
  • Identifies resident needs and responds to them appropriately and promptly.
  • Monitors resident response to therapeutic intervention and reports untoward effects to the RN.
  • Consults with the Registered Nurse.
  • Provides guidance and assistance for unregulated care providers ensuring they provide quality, resident-focussed care and are aware of and comply with the vision and value statements of the ROP, relevant policies, procedures, responsibilities and routines and other relevant information.
  • Promotes a supportive working relationship and effective communication with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Establishes and promotes effective therapeutic relationships between staff members and residents and their families.
  • Administers medications and performs treatments within the RPN’s full scope of practice according to applicable regulations and the College of Nurses of Ontario Professional Standards.
  • Works in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient / client safety practices, policies and procedures of the Royal.
  • Ensures a work environment that is conducive to the Royal’s Harassment-Free Workplace Policy.
  • Other assigned duties as required.
  • Qualifications

  • Graduate of recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Heart saver CPR certification within the last 12 months.
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years recent experience in a long-term care setting with psychiatric / mental health specialization preferred.
  • Completion of Prevention and Management of Disturbed Behaviour / Prevention of Violence in the Workplace Workshop.
  • Current WHMIS training, fire training & review of the Fire, Accident and Disaster Manual.
  • Knowledge of the CNO standards with respect to working with unregulated care providers.
  • Knowledge of the CNO Professional Standards regarding RPN scope of practice for treatments and medication administration.
  • Knowledge of the policies and procedures of the ROP and ability to apply them in a holistic and resident-focused manner.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Pharmacology course from a community College or its equivalent.
  • Demonstrated computer skills for computer based charting an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide guidance and leadership.
  • Current knowledge of mechanical lifts, transferring and positioning techniques for residents.
  • Must complete RAI-MDS training upon hire. Input into the RAI-MDS system is required on an ongoing basis.
  • Training related to mental illness and / or cognitive impairment or related area preferred
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading and writing. Bilingual (French / English) is considered an asset.
