This is an exciting opportunity to join UHN as Deputy Chief Legal Officer.

Position Summary :

The Deputy Chief Legal Officer (DCLO) will support the Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary (CLO) in developing, enhancing and maintaining the organization’s legal services, privacy / access, governance frameworks and strategies, and assist in providing the strategic direction for legal services.

The DCLO is responsible for ensuring the organization’s business arrangements are sound, feasible and consistent with the organization’s policies and law.

As the Deputy Corporate Secretary for the organization, the DCLO will help to support the Governance and Nominating Committee.

The DCLO will also support the Director of Privacy and Legal Operations and the Director of Compliance ensuring that applicable privacy and access laws are complied with.

The DCLO is responsible for ensuring that relevant legal and regulatory issues are understood and that legal, risk and governance frameworks are integrated into the decision making practices and policies of the organization.

The DCLO contributes to the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan, ensuring all policies, programs and initiatives are consistent and supportive of the organization’s mission, vision and values, and acting as a role model through strong relationships and visibility, and through effective internal and external communications.

The DCLO will collaborate with the CLO in the development, implementation and ongoing maintenance of an organization-wide strategy and framework for legal services.

In partnership with the staff of the Legal Affairs Department, the DCLO ensures the development and communication of strategies, policies and procedures to manage risk throughout the organization.

Additionally, the DCLO will support the CLO in overseeing the governance framework for the organization while keeping abreast of current philosophy, legal matters and precedent setting cases to ensure internal organizational practices are appropriate, meet standards or can be adapted to better meet the organization’s plans.

The DCLO will develop the Legal Affairs portfolio’s overall financial and operating plan, forecast budget needs for legal services across the organization.

The DCLO will perform corporate management responsibilities that support and advance UHN’s goals.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law or equivalent
  • Should be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada
  • Proven senior leadership skills with demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate others and create an environment conducive to team building required
  • Demonstrated senior leadership capability
  • Exemplary communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated behaviors supporting values of innovation, integrity, collaboration and excellence
  • Demonstrated ability to interact positively and work cooperatively with colleagues, staff and effectively as part of a team required
  • Proven collaborative planning skills in a fast-paced environment required

  • Ability to lead, function independently and collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of Hospital policies, procedures and protocols required
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills required
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills required
  • Excellent conceptual thinking, analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills required
  • Experience :

  • Eight (8) to ten (10) years of relevant work experience
  • Significant experience in a senior management role in a health care system
  • Strategic experience in fiscal management, the ability to use resources wisely and business understanding to make decisions on resource allocations
  • Demonstrated ability to foster innovation and progressive change
  • Accomplished in leading, mentoring, and motivating colleagues and staff
  • Experience in developing and sustaining effective and collaborative professional working relationships and partnerships
  • Experience in a multi-site health care setting preferred
