R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside) has an opening in our Pickering, Ontario office for a knowledgeable, result-

driven and enthusiastic Senior Municipal Engineer with a minimum of 14+ years of experience to join our growing Municipal Group.

The Senior Municipal Engineer will service public sector clients primarily in and near the Durham Region, but also across Ontario, where there is a variety of infrastructure servicing projects at various stages of development.

Our team assist clients on projects from concept to completion and focuses largely on infrastructure design, and peer review, throughout South Central Ontario.

Projects are variable and range from small urban reconstruction / improvement to large scale regional facilities.

Role Specifics

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, the position will involve (but is not limited to) carrying out the following tasks, and includes :

  • Develop strong relationships with our existing client base and identify potential business initiatives;
  • Provide project and client management services relating mostly to municipal road, sewer and watermain projects, as well as with municipal stormwater management facilities;
  • Assist with growing our Pickering office municipal project team and mentor / further develop junior and support staff, including the coordination of workload;
  • Support the project team, in all ways feasible, to keep them motivated, efficient and productive in meeting client needs on projects;
  • Lead multi-discipline teams and work closely with staff at various levels to ensure projects are carried out in an efficient and professional manner, through meetings, conference calls, and other media;
  • Project budgeting and preparation of proposals, and other business development initiatives;
  • Direct / coordinate the preparation of design drawings and documents;
  • Ensure quality control and timely delivery of project deliverables to meet the client’s needs;
  • Facilitate and secure approvals from commenting agencies;
  • Ensuring continuity of projects through design, tender and construction phases;
  • Support other internal Burnside project teams from other sectors when needed; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Professional Knowledge & Qualifications

    The following qualifications, experience and skills are required :

  • Registered Professional Engineer (Ontario / PEO) with 10 years minimum of licensure, in good standing with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO)
  • 14+ years of progressive Engineering experience in a consulting or municipal environment
  • Strong analytical skills and data management with proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite of programs including MS Project for creation of detailed project schedules
  • Thorough knowledge of municipal and provincial review processes and standards for permitting and approvals
  • Knowledge of road, sewer and watermain construction practices
  • Experience with overseeing and coordinating sub-consultants, procurement, design, construction and commissioning
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to multi-task and work on a number of projects concurrently, leading staff teams
  • The following experience and skills are considered additional assets :

  • Formal project management training, (PMP designation or similar)
  • Hydrotechnical engineering skills, including stormwater management, water distribution / sanitary sewer modeling, hydrology, hydraulics, etc.
  • Knowledge of solid waste engineering
