Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Librarian
In support of Thompson Rivers University Strategic Priorities and the TRU Library Strategic Plan, the University Library is seeking a bipartite tenure-
track Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Librarian. This position is responsible for taking a leadership role in developing relationships between the Library and selected departments within the Faculty of Science, with an emphasis on TRU’s new Engineering program.
The successful candidate will design and deliver a range of innovative instruction, programming, and services that support the curricular and research needs of students and faculty in the STEM disciplines.
As a faculty member, the candidate will pursue professional and service activities in order to meet library and campus-wide criteria for tenure and promotion.
Responsibilities : Liaison
Promote Library services and collections through a variety of liaison activities with selected departments within the Faculty of Science, including selecting and withdrawing materials and participating in collaborative collection development decisions.
Engage with STEM faculty to provide information literacy instruction in STEM related courses.
Create and maintain online science-related instructional materials and content for the Library’s web presence.
Knowledge of the academic research process within the STEM disciplines.
Experience with scientific writing, and knowledge and understanding of what it means to write scientifically.
Participate in library-wide planning and projects through service on teams, committees, task forces, and special projects as assigned.
Provide in-depth research consultations and library instruction for courses in subject areas.
Reference and Instruction
Provide general reference services through face to face and / or online reference tools, including some evenings and weekends.
Serve as a member of the Information Services Team and participate in meetings.
Work collaboratively and collegially with library staff.
Share information on resources and research skills with colleagues.
Teach general information literacy classes and / or assist other liaison librarians’ information literacy classes as required.
Collaborate with other liaison librarians to support interdisciplinary research, scholarship, and collections.
Collaborate with counterparts in the social sciences and humanities to ensure a consistent approach to instruction, learning and research, and outreach.
General responsibilities :
Consult closely and meet regularly with department colleagues and support them in their daily work, professional development, and interaction with users.
Engage in the continual process of long-range planning, assessment, and promotion of library resources and services in coordination with other librarians.
Liaise with other campus departments, libraries, partners, and vendors.
Participate in library events, workshops, and other outreach activities.
Participate with the University Librarian and others in library governance and the development of library policies, planning, and strategic initiatives.
Keep abreast of new developments related to areas of responsibility.
Engage in professional development.
As a faculty member of Thompson Rivers University, participate in University governance and / or serve the University or the profession in other ways as appropriate.
Please address each of these qualifications in your application :
Master’s Degree in Library Science / Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program.
Academic background and / or applicable knowledge of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines demonstrated through undergraduate or advanced degree, coursework, or work experience.
Demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of faculty, students, administrators, staff, and general public.
Demonstrated skills in designing and creating effective learning materials, such as handouts and online tutorials.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in teams.
Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
Demonstrated ability to plan, document, and complete multiple concurrent projects on time.
Familiarity with disciplinary databases such as ACM Digital Library, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and other key resources.
A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in an academic library.
Knowledge of current practices and trends, as they relate to STEM librarianship, in areas that include :
Scholarly communication and open access publishing
Research impact and publication metrics
Information literacy and instruction
Information seeking behaviour
Information services delivery
