Position Overview The Building Service Worker-Lead Hand primary area of responsibility is to perform manual janitorial work limited to moderate complexity and is responsible for providing, direction and leadership to assigned Building Service Worker crews.

Example of key activities are :

  • Oversees and coordinates activities of workers engaged in janitorial services.
  • Assigns janitorial work to employees, following material and work requirements.
  • Regularly inspects assigned building for cleanliness & work performed to ensure conformance to specifications and established standards.
  • Identify Staff development and training needs and insures that training is obtained.
  • Encourages accountability, provides training and guidance to Building Service Worker staff and regularly reports and coordinates with the Aquatic Maintenance Supervisor in all matters relating to day to day operations, larger janitorial projects, scheduling, employee / program assessment, and conflict resolution.
  • Assesses and makes recommendations to the Aquatic Maintenance Supervisor in matters involving operations, basic building minor repairs and maintenance of janitorial cleaning equipment.
  • Taking inventory, ordering, distributing supplies throughout assigned facility.
  • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders including City staff, management, senior management, contractors, and emergency personnel.
  • Responds to customer concerns and issues and makes decisions in accordance to City policy, practices and procedures that are routine in nature and refers unusual or difficult problems to a superior.
  • Providing support for a variety of building activities and events including set up and / or take down of furniture and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Education & Experience Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent plus successful completion of a recognized Building Service Worker course and possess a valid program certificate, in addition a minimum of 2 years’ experience in janitorial work, preferably in a municipal sector.

    Completion of supervisory courses would be preferred. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

    Knowledge & Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in janitorial work, routine building maintenance, and minor repair tasks.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of operations of routine building equipment maintenance and minor repair tasks.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System).
  • Ability to provide leadership and encourage team towards achieving excellent results.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective regular cleaning routines and procedures.
  • Ability to identify and schedule effectively large program cleaning needs.
  • Ability to understand, follow and initiate non-complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and deal tactfully and courteously with the public, external suppliers / businesses and City staff.
  • Ability to perform simple repairs and maintenance tasks on janitorial cleaning equipment and building services such as changing light bulbs or closing off water valves under sinks.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively, and work under minimal supervision.
  • Strong team building and interpersonal skills to effectively contribute to a positive team environment.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision making and problem solving.
  • Ability to use ladders, scissor lift, and other equipment used in janitorial services.
  • Ability to use computer applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and other software programs specific to janitorial services.
  • Ability to successfully pass and maintain a Police Information Check.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing is an asset.

  • Waste Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certificate
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers Licence for the Province of British Columbia
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Blood Borne Pathogen Certificate
  • First Aid / Occupational First Aid
  • Floor Care Technician Certificate
  • Carpet Care Technician Certificate
  • Valid First Aid (OFA Level 1) Certificate
  • Working Conditions and Effort Regular exposure to dirt, dust, mold, infectious diseases and exposure to body fluids, during bathroom duties.

    Routine light and heavy physical effort and capability required to carry out duties, including lifting of heavy objects and other various articles / items.
