For people living with a life-limiting illness, it can seem like a never ending series of appointments, treatments and caregivers flowing in and out of one’s home.
The illness takes over; it becomes a way of life; it becomes a new identity. Whether it is the person walking the journey of a life-
limiting illness or their family, the whole situation is exhausting. One of the best gifts we can offer is a day off from illness .
The Community Hospice Program at SCHC professionally trains compassionate, caring and committed volunteers to provide social, emotional, practical and spiritual support to individuals living with a life-
enhances quality of life and celebrates each day to the fullest; offers opportunities to connect with others who are on a similar journey and provides much-
needed respite for caregivers.
Our volunteers are reliable, respectful, have good inter-personal and communication skills and are committed to providing empathetic and judgment-
free service to a range of people from diverse cultural and faith backgrounds in Scarborough. You will receive training, ongoing support and recognition and be part of a team of people who consistently say that they get more than they give from this unique and life-
enhancing volunteer opportunity.
SCHC is currently looking for volunteers with daytime availability on Wednesdays willing to bring their creativity, imagination and friendly, open personality to provide a welcoming and life-
enhancing environment. Participation in the volunteer training program ( offered ongoing throughout the year ) is necessary.
Additional languages are an asset
Location for training has plenty of free parking and is TTC accessible (a very short bus ride from Kennedy station). Our groups and individual meetings are currently conducted at the HUB mid-
Scarborough which is a fully accessible building.

Training & Location
Participation in our organizational screening, orientation and training, plus successful completion of 30 hour professional hospice bereavement care training (certificate provided).
Police and personal reference checks. Training takes place at the mid-Scarborough HUB, Brimley & Eglinton.
About 3 hours per week for the duration of the 10-week day hospice program. Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of one year and may move between the hospice palliative care home-
visiting volunteer role and the day hospice volunteer role.
