Class Power Engineer looking for a new and exciting role in a First Class Plant? You will be part of an operating team of a Green Energy, 40MW biomass electric generating plant.

With a staff of 22 full time employees and a 30 year guaranteed performance contract, the plant will be supplied with 200,000 oven dry tons of biomass fuel per year.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Shift Engineer (Relief) is responsible for supervising and directing the activities of the Operations personnel on their shift.

The successful candidate will also perform the duties of Control Room Operator, and may assume the responsibilities of the Operations Manager (Chief Engineer) in their absence.

The Shift Engineer (Relief) is responsible for providing vacation and leave relief for the Shift Engineers and for the other members of their crew (the Assistant Shift Engineer, the Plant Engineer and Assistant Plant Engineer).

The Shift Engineer (Relief) is designated as the top-ranking individual for after-hours, weekend, and holiday times when the plant management staff is not on site, and is responsible for plant operations and decisions regarding personnel and safety matters.

Shifts : To be determined but we expect they will be 12 hours shifts. This position will provide vacation, leave and / or training relief firstly for Shift Engineers assigned to a specific crew, secondly to other Operations personnel on each crew.

  • Must be available for overtime if required, OT eligible
  • Education :

  • The candidate will possess a valid BC Interprovincial First Class or Second Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency
  • Experience :

  • Experience in plant operations including at least ten years in hands-on and / or supervision of Power Plant machinery is required
  • Previous experience commissioning greenfield biomass power plants will be an asset
  • Experience in a power generating plant
  • Experience working with biomass
  • Experience with DCS and CEMS operation is a requirement of this role
  • General knowledge and / or experience in industrial safety are required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience as a Control Room Operator or Shift Supervisor in a Solid Fuel facility is highly desirable
  • Supervisory background in an electrical generating facility is preferred
  • Skills and Abilities :

  • Ability to tolerate dust and other airborne particles and work around other materials such as biomass, diesel and lube oils.
  • Ability to work for prolonged periods in extremes of hot and cold temperatures and inclement weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolds, and high-lifts, and in confined spaces.
  • Solid computer skills : proficiency with spreadsheet, email, and word processing software required; Microsoft Office and Windows preferred.
  • A working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Software (OWAM) applications will be an asset.
  • Work Requirements :

  • Under certain conditions while working in the plant, may be required to wear a respirator
  • Be able to work for prolonged periods in extremes of hot and cold temperatures and inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear safety equipment and FR clothing where appropriate
  • Requires frequent stooping, bending, climbing, reaching, and carrying and moving heavy objects with assistance when required
  • Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolds, and high-lifts, and in confined spaces.
  • Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Designated top-ranking individual for after-hours, weekend, and holiday times when the plant management staff is not on site, and is responsible for plant operations and decisions regarding personnel and safety matters.
  • Perform Control Room Operator duties such as operate the plant from the distributed control system while ensuring that all plant equipment is operated within design parameters;
  • monitoring plant operations and making adjustments as needed to optimize performance.

  • Supervise, direct and effectively coordinate the Operating Crew on their shift to safely operate the power plant and associated equipment in accordance with established procedures, practices and regulations.
  • Effectively communicates plant status to Plant Management, the Operators and other persons in the Plant.
  • Assist the Operations Manager in the oversight of daily plant operations and with plant scheduling and manpower loading.
  • Assist the Operations Manager with the optimization of plant operating performance and production.
  • Assist the Operations Manager with budgeting and prioritizing Capital requirements.
  • Assist the Operations and Maintenance Managers with the planning of the maintenance shutdowns.
  • Collaborates with the Tradespeople, Plant Management and / or Contractors to troubleshoot and resolve maintenance issues.
  • Operate the plant and all associated equipment through the DCS system to ensure operation within specified parameters.
  • Collaboratively participate in all commissioning and start-up activities as required.
  • Ensure the plant and associated equipment is operated in compliance with applicable regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the shutdown planning and scheduling activities for both sites. Collaborate with local teams in identifying work and with the writing of procedures and task identification for individual site requirements.
  • Exercise sound judgment and take timely actions as needed to ensure personnel safety, to remain in compliance with regulations, and to prevent equipment damage.
  • Administer the plant Lock Out / Tag Out program to ensure tasks are completed safely.
  • Implement safety programs and lead Operating Crew members to adopt safe work practices.
  • Perform plant rounds outside the Control Room as required.
  • Provide leadership to develop standard operating procedures and practices.
  • Ensure that the SOPs are revised and reviewed in a timely manner to reflect current best way practices to operate the equipment.
  • Troubleshoot operational problems and initiate maintenance requests.
  • Manage the performance of Operating Crew members. Encourage, train, mentor and coach Operating Crew members to complete their job tasks, learning systems and for professional qualifications.
  • Assists operational and maintenance teams in achieving operations, maintenance, reliability and capital objectives. Identify gaps in the management system and makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Assess risks posed by identified problems and ensure management and other plant personnel are made aware of those risks.
  • Perform minor breakdown and preventive maintenance tasks as required.
  • Perform other duties related to operations including assisting with maintenance planning and coordination, investigating loss events, and developing / reviewing procedures.
  • Provides Team Members with performance and development feedback and support.
  • Signs off other Team Members’ qualifications as competent to operate a given system.
  • Collaborate to develop the site reliability and operations continuity plans.
  • Work with the site teams to prepare and review safe work procedures for all operating and shutdown activities.
  • Ensure good communication and cooperation between both Plant sites and with corporate teams. Contribute and in some cases lead the development of regional initiatives.
  • May have the opportunity to assist and work at the other plant for short assignments.
  • May be asked to participate on health and safety committees and initiatives.
  • Ensure good communication with stakeholder representatives.
  • Ensure the compliance of subcontractors and participate in their pre-qualification.
  • Complete required logs and reports.
  • Schedule Operating Crew personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
