  • The Opportunity

    As part of our Maintenance group and reporting to the AVP, Maintenance, the Operations Manager is responsible for leading our track maintenance activities in the Ottawa and Chatham regions.

    Key Responsibilities and Functions

    Leadership :

  • Be a strong leader and promote RailTerm’s safety culture, quality processes and compliance to standards and policies;
  • Mobilize and engage team towards achieving the objectives and meeting key performance indicators;
  • Be an ambassador of RailTerm when interacting with customers, suppliers and employees;
  • Act as a role model when it comes to safety, quality of work and efficiency of operations.
  • Human Resources and Operations Oversight :

  • Provide direct leadership, oversight and guidance to a team of track supervisors, foremen, flagging foremen and track maintainers (between 25 and 30 employees);
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of all maintenance and repair activities;
  • Ensure that the work performed is completed in accordance with regulatory requirements and all applicable standards, with a high-degree of quality;
  • Ensure that all required inspections and testing are performed as per requirements;
  • Perform reporting duties (including Key Performance Indicators’s) as per the Maintenance Plan and customer requirements;
  • Act as a leader in terms of safety, providing guidance and information on safety practices, procedures or policies;
  • Ensure that efficiency and operational testing is performed in the field and follow-up on non-compliances and corrective actions;
  • Lead accident, incident and near miss investigations and assess disciplinary measures, if and when required.
  • Financial and material resources management :

  • Control costs according to budgets and ensure efficient and adequate use of resources, including equipment;
  • Manage the use and maintenance of a fleet of vehicles, equipment and machinery;
  • Responsible for the planning and execution of all regular maintenance requirements and lifecycle renewal requirements in an organized, efficient and cost-effective manner;
  • Negotiate contracts with subcontractors;
  • Coordinate accounts receivables and payables with head office while monitoring PO’s in the ERP system;
  • Approve payroll and expenses;
  • Prepare budgets and cost estimates.
  • Client Relationship Management :

  • Maintain steady interaction and reporting with the customer, as needed;
  • Report and follow-up on operational issues or incidents with the client, as needed;
  • Participate in meetings and discussions with the client regarding operating plans, service requirements, and other needs.
  • Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of management experience in the field of railway maintenance operations (ex : Manager, Track Supervisor, Road Master, etc.);
  • College education diploma in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated experience in managing work crews;
  • Thorough understanding of engineering track standards and track safety regulations;
  • Knowledgeable with track inspection procedures, installation and maintenance work;
  • Strong Leadership and Management Skills;
  • Highly organized and flexible;
  • Team player with the ability to train, supervise coach other employees;
  • Self-motivation and distinctive assertiveness;
  • Excellent written and verbal skills;
  • Excellent Skills in MS Office, SharePoint;
  • Ability to work under pressure and take ownership of escalating issues;
  • Valid driving licence.
