SEASPAN FINANCE TEAM

The Seaspan Finance Team shares a high performance culture with a focus and dedication to best in class capital allocation practices.

The Accounting Team is a central pillar of the broader finance team’s strategy.

As a member of the Finance Team, this position will work across several accounting areas. This Financial Reporting Analyst role is responsible for the overall direction and management of the Financial Reporting team including reporting, consolidations, technical accounting and inventory control for both Seaspan Corporation and all of its wholly owned subsidiaries.

This position works with the Financial Reporting and Corporate Finance teams on forecasting, treasury, and public company requirements.

This position also ensures the highest level of integrity and compliance with all jurisdictional, regulatory, US GAAP and SEC requirements.

The position requires a self-starter with a strong financial background, attention to detail, and a strong drive for continuous improvement.

SEASPAN FLEET

Seaspan’s fleet has evolved over time to meet the varying needs of their customer base. They own vessels in a wide range of sizes, from 2,500 TEU ships to their recently delivered 14,000 TEU vessels.

Seaspan oversees and manages every aspect of the process from ship to shore. A conservative, strategic approach allows for measured and consistent growth, while a strong set of values govern the integrity of their everyday decisions.

As the largest independent charter owner and manager of containerships, they are truly a global operation and employ more than 4000 people at their offices in Hong Kong, Canada, India, China and Korea, as well as on board their large fleet of vessels.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to the management of the financial affairs of the corporation and accountable for the development of all accounting and reporting including MD&A, 20-
  • F and earnings releases. Ensure financial statements accurately present the financial position of the corporation and all transactions have been recorded and disclosed in accordance with US GAAP

  • Supports the Vice President of Accounting and Executive team on analysis, financing, investor relations, and tax functions
  • Meets regulatory reporting requirements and deadlines, and internal reporting requirements including to the board and senior management
  • Designs, develops, monitors and implements processes to enhance accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting to support corporate strategy and decision making
  • Assists with developing accounting policies & controls and ensures that all department employees adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Provide support to a team of professional accountants by reviewing their journal entries, working papers and provide guidance to accomplish their tasks efficiently and effectively
  • Demonstrates strong understanding of the technical accounting issues and able to implement as part of day to day reporting
  • Supports operational managers and senior management by providing data, analysis, advice and recommendations that support the organization and decision making
  • Ensures internal controls are implemented and followed
  • Works with internal audit on continuous improvement initiatives, documentation of internal controls and development of best practices
  • Provide support to the external auditors for the interim reviews and annual audits
  • Supports the work of the board and audit committee including preparation of board and audit committee materials
  • Identifies and takes steps to monitor and mitigate risks
  • Performs other duties as required
  • PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS

  • CPA designation, preferably articled with Big Four Accounting Firm
  • Minimum of 5 years Canadian and / or US public reporting experience in audit and / or industry
  • Strong leadership, communication, process improvement, attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines with the production of high quality, accurate work product
  • Experience with international operations and consolidation
  • Project management and / or system integration experience
  • Availability via a mobile device outside of office hours
  • Periodic overtime to meet deadlines or accommodate time zone differences

  • A finance background and a clear understanding of how key business metrics are applied in the business and economic models used by analysts to determine enterprise value.

  • After one year, this individual should be fully integrated into the department and be viewed as a key contributor to the financial services department.
  • Together with the Corporate Reporting Manager, this individual will have successfully streamlined the month end close and reporting processes by working with both the team and internal audit on identifying process efficiencies and ensuring best practices.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree from a recognized institution
