Overview

Reporting into the Finance organization, the Payroll and Benefits Manager is responsible for overseeing all the day-to-day operations of the North American payroll and is based in our Vancouver offices.

We are looking for an individual who has the technical skills and is ready to take the next step in their career to evaluate our current processes and develop new processes, policies, procedures and structure within the payroll function.

Position Responsibilities

This position is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing for over 350 salaried and hourly employees in North America and will support some international based employees by partnering with internal stakeholders as well as outside vendors.

This role will also help ensure payroll tax compliance is maintained and drive continuous improvements.

  • Manage the Payroll and Benefits function, coordinating the daily activities and prioritizing the work, ensuring the delivery of a high quality, responsive and efficient service
  • Working along side the the Payroll and Benefits Coordinator for the processing of payroll and benefits for all payroll / benefits across all jurisdictions of Canada, US, and China;
  • including payroll processing, employee benefit plans, pensions (RSP, 401K, China and International Social benefits), year-

    end compliance, and workers compensation

  • Leave Management : oversee the processing of employee leaves of absence, disability and workers compensation claims
  • Year-end Reporting : oversee and approve the preparation of annual audit working papers and reports
  • Liaise with HR during major HR annual programs and initiatives; provide all relevant and accurate data and reports
  • Work with HR in providing HR data and analytics support
  • Lead the annual review of our benefit plans including the evaluation of brokers and insurance providers
  • Develop, recommend and implement internal policies to ensure compliance with applicable legislation pertaining to benefits and payroll
  • Payroll Compliance : understand current and future changes to laws and regulations that may impact the organization’s payroll, compensation and benefits.
  • Adopt requirements and communicate changes as needed

  • Lead the assessment, selection and implementation of new payroll and benefits systems
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external benefit and payroll advisors / consultants / tax experts
  • Be an active participant in continuous improvement of processes within Payroll and Benefits through workflow efficiency and maintain and strengthen internal policies and controls
  • Maintain a knowledge and familiarity with regulatory requirements and legislative changes ensuring that all payrolls are compliant with their respective government, pension, etc. regulations
  • Act as a single point of escalation for general questions and be responsible for issue resolution
  • Oversee the payroll process for the Canadian, US and International operations using Ceridian and ADP
  • Prepare / finalize monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll reporting and taxes with internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide coverage and support for Solium Capital related matters (equity)
  • Work with other international HR and Payroll Managers to set up and execute our equity base compensation program (stock options, shares)
  • Position Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive Canadian and US payroll experience; strong technical knowledge of applicable legislation in both payroll and benefits
  • 2+ years of experience with International payroll or experience establishing payroll in new jurisdictions and establishing contracts
  • Degree / Diploma in Business, Accounting or Human Resources or related field with ideally a CPM designation
  • Experience with payroll and benefits systems and design, development, management and maintenance of integrated payroll / benefits system
  • Ability to lead and work collaboratively within the Payroll and Finance Teams including performance management and staff development;
  • Strong research skills in a variety of mediums to remain up to date on best practices, industry trends and relevant legislation
  • Proficiency at using payroll software packages and related business management software. Preference given for experience working in Ceridian, ADP,
  • Experience with Solium Capital is an asset
  • A strong emphasis on accuracy and quality
  • Ability to multi-task and to co-ordinate a series of different jobs concurrently
  • Good level of IT literacy; familiarity with databases and current software packages
  • Competent oral and written communication skills, with ability to evaluate queries and advise employees in a timely and professional manner
  • Customer-focused with a service-oriented approach
  • Ability to lead and work collaboratively within the Payroll and Finance Teams including performance management and staff development;
  • Strong research skills in a variety of mediums to remain up to date on best practices, industry trends and relevant legislation
