JOB SUMMARY :

The Department of Liberal Studies requires occasional Part Time Professors to develop and teach a variety of courses at various times of the year that focus on Indigenous ways of knowing, doing and thinking, including Indigenous histories, realities and current affairs.

Examples of existing courses that could be delivered include the following :

INDS 10022 Aboriginal and Western Perspectives

INDS 10020 Through the Medicine Wheel : Connecting with Indigenous Peoples of Canada

Proposed new courses that could be developed and taught in the future include the following :

Indigenous Health and Wellness

Indigenous Art and Culture

Indigenous Advocacy

Reporting to the Associate Dean Department of Liberal Studies, Professors are responsible for course development and delivery, learning plans, student evaluations, and providing a positive effective learning environment for students.

Part Time Professors are required to teach approximately 2-6 hours / week. Courses are scheduled Monday Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.

m., which is when prospective candidates must be available.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following :

  • Preparing materials that fulfill the course learning outcomes, planning lessons, developing assignments and exams that reflect the integrated nature of the curriculum.
  • Developing, delivering and revising learning resources within the department.
  • Posting online content, facilitating student discussions and responding electronically to students within 48 hrs.
  • Evaluating student progress against the learning outcomes.
  • Creating a positive learning environment in the classroom and laboratories.
  • Using a variety of teaching and learning strategies / techniques, including to evaluate student achievement.
  • Implementation of program, division and college wide policies and procedures.
  • Promotion of student success initiatives.
  • QUALIFICATIONS :

    The successful applicant will have :

  • Academic credentials (i.e. Diploma, Degree, certification and / or professional designation) relevant to the course subject that they intend to teach.
  • 3-5 years of relevant work / teaching experience, especially in Indigenous studies related issues and courses.
  • Post-secondary teaching training and / or experience considered a strong asset.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Desire2Learn learning management system, and online teaching or learning experience, would be considered strong assets.
  • An ethical engagement within Indigenous communities with reference letters and supporting documentation communicating their relationship(s).
  • Engagement will include but not be limited to understanding the importance of consensus-building relationships.

    The successful candidate must have an ability to relate theoretical knowledge and practical applications through innovative delivery methods so as to provide a meaningful learning environment for students of diverse backgrounds and ages.

    The ability to work as a part of a team and demonstration of excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

    The faculty member will consult with Mohawk College’s Indigenous education circle, Elders and Indigenous students to build a safe learning environment that respects Indigenous cultures and identities.

    Faculty members hired at Mohawk College must be prepared to teach with a learner-centered approach and to assist in the development and application of alternate delivery methods.

    He / she may be assigned to teach classes at any College Campus.
