Job Summary :

The cook / dietary aide is responsible for the preparation and service of well-balanced meals to residents of our Retirement Home, following established menus while considering therapeutic diets and resident’s preference in consultation with the supervisor, and clean-

up following meal service. Responsibilities will be performed in accordance with food handling and safety standards, Canada’s Food Guide, and within the framework of Carefor policies, procedures, and standards.

Primary Responsibilities include :

  • Monitor the operation of all kitchen equipment
  • Provides information to supervisor to enable effective meal planning
  • Monitoring and recording equipment readings i.e. temperature of fridges
  • Preparing and cooking food according to sanitation and standardized guidelines pertaining to food preparation
  • Receiving and checking accuracy of food and supply orders and reporting concerning to supervisor or designate
  • Providing direction to other members of the dietary staff
  • Maintaining a clean, safe environment
  • Setting up equipment and supplies for food preparation
  • Prepares meals, dessert, and / or snacks following standardized approved recipes, being careful to minimize waste and leftovers, and cook food according to sanitation and standardized guidelines pertaining to food preparation
  • Cleanup of kitchen area
  • Makes observations of resident behaviour and intervenes according to job expectation e.g. nutritional intake, disruptive behaviour in dining room, attendance for meals, general concerns affecting operations of the dietary department
  • Assists residents, if needed, to cut food or pour beverages
  • Functions and reports in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and Carefor policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties / tasks as assigned by manager
  • Key Qualifications & Experience include :

  • Cook Certification from approved College, or an acceptable combination of education and experience may also be considered
  • Food Handling and Safety certificate, required
  • Experience with cooking meals for large groups, food prep, serving food, using kitchen equipment, customer service, working with seniors, working in a similar setting
  • Experience providing leadership to kitchen staff
  • Experience with or knowledge of creating menus
  • Ability and available to fulfill the shift rotation designed for position (early morning, late evening, and weekends)
  • Experience working in nursing home or similar environment would be considered an asset
  • Ability to understand oral and written directions
  • Ability to calculate recipe quantities
  • Ability to handle the temperatures of working in a kitchen environment
  • Interested in supporting seriors and adults with mental illnesses
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety as relates to job

    General Work Information :

  • This position will belong to a union
  • No guarantee of hours
  • Must be available to pick up a combination of day, evening, night & weekend shifts
