Examination of the historical experiences and contemporary perspectives on education of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people, from their own points of view, including traditional approaches to education, experiences in government-
controlled and residential schools, and the problems and possibilities of self-government in education. Exploration of First Nations, Inuit and Métis perspectives on the role of education in language preservation, cultural renewal and the achievement of self-government.

Masters degree in education required; PhD degree in education will be given preference.At least one of the following : 1) recent experience in teaching full-
time in a school or working in the administration of a school board including two years of experience in implementing the Ontario curriculum in the Primary Junior divisions with specialist qualification in Teaching First Nations, Métis or Inuit, or 2) current peer-
review research file in Native Studies, or 3) recent PhD comprehensive examinations in Native Studies. Demonstrated knowledge of the current Ontario Curriculum relating to Native Studies and of the documents of the Ontario Ministry of Education relating to Native Studies.
Proven capacity to apply the Ethical Standards and Standards of Practice of the Ontario College of Teachers.The University may consider experience or qualifications equivalent to those set out above.
